"Introduction to Research in Molecular Biology"

This 3-credit Faculty of Arts and Sciences course is open to high school students who participate in the research project associated with the Waksman Student Scholars Program. More than 350 students have taken it since its inception in 1998.

The current research project (2007-2008) involves the brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana. In an effort to find out its evolutionary relationship with other organisms and to characterize some of the interesting genes and proteins of this creature, we are sequencing its cDNA's. In the summer of 2005, a cDNA library was prepared from adult shrimp, and students from 19 New Jersey high schools helped sequence several dozen cDNA's. The analysis of these and additional sequences will be an important part of the 105 course.

Registration Information:

Students can earn three college credits for their work by enrolling in this course and fulfilling the course requirements, which include:

• contributing to academic year research activities conducted at your high school;
• participating in the Waksman Challenges as a member of a team;
• taking part in the development and presentation of a poster at the Waksman Forum Poster Session tentatively scheduled for June, 2008;
• completing independently a midterm and final examination that will be developed by Dr. Sofer and administered by your team teacher.

PLEASE NOTE:  Students who enroll in the course and pay the tuition and fees are entitled to a Rutgers email account and can access the University’s electronic library services.

Students who complete the 119:105 course or participated in the WSSP projects during the 2005 or 2006 academic years are eligible to take "Pre-College Independent Research in Molecular Biology" (01:119:107).
